Understanding Oral Cancer

What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer refers to cancers of the mouth and throat. It can affect the lips, tongue, cheeks, floor of the mouth, hard and soft palate, sinuses, and pharynx. Early detection is key to successful treatment and recovery.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing oral cancer, including:

  • Tobacco Use: Smoking and smokeless tobacco significantly increase your risk.

  • Alcohol Consumption: Excessive alcohol use can also raise the likelihood of developing oral cancer.

  • HPV Infection: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is linked to oropharyngeal cancers.

  • Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to lip cancer.

  • Age and Gender: Oral cancer is more common in men and those over the age of 40.

What to Expect

What to Expect During an Oral Cancer Screening

Visual Examination

Our dentist will inspect your mouth, lips, and throat for any visible signs of cancer. This includes checking the inside of your cheeks, the roof and floor of your mouth, your tongue, and your gums.

Physical Examination

We will gently feel your neck, jaw, and inside of your mouth to detect any unusual lumps or masses. This part of the screening helps identify abnormalities that may not be visible to the naked eye.

Follow-Up and Referrals

If we find any areas of concern, we will discuss the next steps with you. This may include further tests, a biopsy, or a referral to a specialist for additional evaluation and treatment.
